The Data Clubs project believes that middle school learners can and should know how to interpret data to make decisions and manipulate data to answer their own questions. This project introduces middle school youth to the power of data and gives them simple tools for visualizing and analyzing data on topics they care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three modules engage them with \u201cbig\u201d data\u2014large data sets collected by government agencies (e.g., NOAA and the Census Bureau), research institutes (e.g., the Pew Center) and international collaborations (e.g., the Census at School project) \u2014curated by the Data Clubs team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Participants learn to:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>consider the who, where, when, how, and why of data;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visualize, analyze, and look for meaningful patterns using <a href=\"https:\/\/codap.concord.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CODAP<\/a>, a free online data tool;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>collect their own data to answer their own questions;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>experiment with representing data, using graphic design ideas from the book, <a href=\"\/\/www.dear-data.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dear Data<\/a>; and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>see data everywhere and make meaning from it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"530\" height=\"348\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/dataclubs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/06\/data-clubs-learner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-67\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/dataclubs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/06\/data-clubs-learner.jpg 530w, https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/dataclubs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/06\/data-clubs-learner-300x197.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 530px) 100vw, 530px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"217\" height=\"47\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terc.edu\/dataclubs\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/06\/divider.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39\" style=\"width:54px;height:12px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funder<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Data Clubs project is funded by the U.S. National Science Foundation, grant nos.
